Synopsis:

Such was the obscurity into which Sir Francis Drake was born, that neither the date of his birth, nor the name of his mother is known for certain. Yet as a great seaman, he plundered Spanish treasure ships, circumnavigated the world, rose to become Vice Admiral of the English Navy, and most importantly, played a pivotal role in the defeat of the mighty Spanish Armada. How, from such obscurity, did he achieve all this? And was he at heart the ruthless and unprincipled pirate, as we are led to believe, or is there a more human face behind the pirates mask?
