I was born in Newbury, Berkshire, UK in 1943, and educated at Thornhill High School, Gwelo, Southern Rhodesia and at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. In 1970 I qualified in medicine and worked as a family doctor in the UK until 1983 when I sustained a back injury. I then decided to use my diagnostic skills in a different way and become a writer. I am married to Rachel.

Ideas for Books
I write, invariably because of a fascination with the particular subject about which I choose to write. A doctor is trained to have an enquiring mind, and many of my books deal with hitherto unexplained phenomena. In HMS Hood: Pride of the Royal Navy, for example, I query the official version of why the great ship sank, and put forward my own, ground-breaking theory. In By Swords Divided: Corfe Castle in the Civil War, I pose the question, how could a woman defend such a place for several years of the English Civil War against all the odds? In Thomas Hardy: Behind the Inscrutable Smile, I seek to discover how Hardy’s relationship with his wife influenced his writings. In Agatha Christie: The Finished Portrait, I probe the mystery of her extraordinary disappearance for eleven days in 1926. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: Beyond Sherlock Holmes, I ask the question, did the great author really believe in fairies, and if so why? In Adolf Hitler: The Final Analysis, I investigate the Fuhrer’s mental state, and make a startling discovery. In TE Lawrence: The Enigma Explained, I seek to explain the personality change that TEL underwent during World War I.
